How to Enroll
To enroll in the program, current UAS students can enroll via UAOnline. Non-UAS students can register via paper form. Complete and return to Glenn Wright at gdwright@alaska.edu.
Course Options
Students can register for one of the following courses:
- Biology (BIOL) 493: Oceanographic Expedition
- CRN 37471 — 4 credits
Explores the coastal oceanography of Alaska, with particular emphasis on the inside passage and connections between glaciers and ocean processes. Includes one-week sea kayaking expedition to a glacial fjord. Students will experience paddling in glacial fjords, observe them as an interface between the cryosphere and the ocean, see the range of ecosystem functions and services to natural and human communities they provide, and identify how they are sensitive to climate change. Students will participate in oceanographic expedition planning and implementation, use autonomous sensors and scientific instruments, identify key oceanographic principles through field observations, and develop skills to document their scientific observations using a scientific notebook, audio, photo, and video recordings. Recommended prep courses: BIOL S215, BIOLS349, BIOL S405, BIOL S427, ENVS S110, ENVS S302. Prerequisites: PE S133/ODS S133, upper-division standing in the Natural Sciences department, or instructor approval. First two class sessions available in person or by distance.
- Political Science (PS) 493: Political Ecology Expedition
- CRN 35766 — 3 credits
An exploration of the intersection of politics and ecology in Southeast Alaska, including prehistoric, historic and contemporary resource management. Includes a week-long sea kayaking expedition in Southeast Alaska. Prerequisite: PE 133 or ODS 133 or instructor permission.

Program Costs
At the University of Alaska, all students (including non-resident students) pay in-state tuition provided they take four credits or fewer in a semester (including summer semester).

What do tuition and fees include?
Tuition and fees for BIOL 493 and PS 493 include:
- Academic instruction
- Course materials
- Use of paddling and group camping gear (kayak, paddle, life jacket, drysuit, paddling booties, safety gear, tents, cooking shelter etc.)
- Food and cooking gear (stoves, fuel, pots & pans, bear resistant food containers etc.)
Tuition and fees do not include:
- Transport to/from Juneau before and after the course
- In-town room and board at the beginning and end of the course (lodging is available at UAS student housing as well as the Juneau Youth Hostel as well as other options).
- Personal gear such as toiletries, clothing, personal sleeping bag and sleeping pad, etc.
